Fathers of Nations by Paul B. Vita is a political novel that examines the challenges facing African countries. The story focuses on African leaders who meet at a summit in Banjul to discuss ways of solving the political, social and economic problems affecting the continent. The leaders are expected to provide solutions to problems such as poverty, corruption, poor governance and underdevelopment. However, the meeting reveals that many of the leaders are more interested in power and personal benefits than in improving the lives of their citizens. The novel also follows the life of Professor Karanja Kimani, a Kenyan academic whose life is affected by personal and social problems. Kimani suffers the loss of his daughter, Tuni, in a road accident. His marriage also breaks down when his wife, Asiya, leaves him for another man. Through Kimani's experiences, the author shows how ordinary people can suffer because of social problems, poor leadership and difficult economic conditions. His story also demonstrates the emotional and personal effects of the problems facing African society. Another important character is Comrade Ngobile Melusi, a former freedom fighter from Zimbabwe. Although Melusi participated in the struggle for independence, he later experiences discrimination because of his ethnic background. The political leadership favours its own ethnic group, leaving Melusi and other members of his community frustrated. The situation contributes to political tension and conflict. Through Melusi's experience, Vita exposes the dangers of tribalism, political betrayal and leaders who forget the principles for which they fought during the struggle for independence. The Banjul summit and the experiences of the different characters help the author present his main message about Africa's future. The novel criticises corruption, tribalism, selfish leadership, poverty and foreign influence while encouraging African leaders to become responsible and visionary. The proposals discussed at the summit, including Omega and Path Alpha, represent possible approaches to solving Africa's problems. Ultimately, Fathers of Nations calls for unity, good governance, accountability and leaders who genuinely work for the development and welfare of their people.
